Having one last soft-serve ice cream at the Ministop on the first floor of Narita Airport is a mandatory final treat.
I picked up an anpan (red bean bun) at the same time.
My daughter scolded me, saying, “You’ve bought enough already, cut it out!” But once you pass through security, you can’t find these cheap, trashy snacks anymore.
I’m fully aware that it might get squished in my bag, and I know it’s not actually that good in a sophisticated way; still, I cling onto nostalgia until the very last second. I go out of my way to buy cheap buns with long expiration dates, such as red bean or cream buns, to bring back home. Since they didn’t have any cream buns this time, anpan it was.
Then, the day after arriving back home, we savor the lingering afterglow of the trip.
Daughter: “…This is actually good.”
Me: “See? Told you. Not bad, right?”
Daughter: “Yeah. Sorry for telling you’re buying too much.”
…is how the conversation went.
